Question by Yuval G: Recommendations for a new camera?
I already own the Olympus SP-550UZ, and while it is a great camera, I’m looking for something a little more professional. I’m considering buying a digital SLR camera. I talked to a few professional photographers, and from what I understand Nikon and Cannon are the most popular and best makers of digital SLR cameras. But I want the name of a specific model, or a few models to check if that’s possible. It doesn’t have to be Nikon or Cannon, it just has to be something I will be able to find at a photography store.

Go to the local retailer and compare them first hand. Hold them, play with them, run through the menus, etc. Take some sample shots and feel the shutter, Get an idea for the work flow and changing menus, etc.
In the end, the best camera is going to be one that is supported locally near you, with available accessories, lenses and flashes, and one that fits you personally. I recently went through the same choices, and agonized between the Canon 50D and the Nikon d90. I ultimately went with the canon 40D (one step down) because of price of the body, and more importantly availability of the lenses (cheaper – more focal length per dollar).
In the end, it comes down to learning your system and shooting. Shooting some more. And ultimately, shooting still more. Camera’s are tools. The photographer takes the picture. With the quality of todays dSLR’s there is so little difference between the bodies, that it really comes down to personal fit, feel and comfort of work flow.
